Just attending the Moodlenmoot in Ch Ch and learning heaps of things

Mike, please keep us informed along your journey and welcome on board.

Paul.

Is it already term 4?. We now have had several Staff sessions on Moodle. We have a server installed for it in our College and we are trying out Moodle 2.0.

The Staff have had basic introductions and are just getting onto it now. We have had difficulties with the Staff all logging on at training sessions without success and speed wobbles like passwords forgotten! The general feeling is that the techno side is not up to scratch yet.

Shame but there is still enthusiasm for getting into it.

I have personally tried to digitalise many of my class lessons with the idea of moodling many of my Maths lessons in 2011. This process does take some time but trying to use “pdf’s” and also “web links” that are reliable. I must say that I have heard that some Maths Departments think that Wikis are the way to go. I am not sure how that can be the case as Wikis are a subset of the Moodle package and therefore able to be used as a function of the whole package.

Am I as a maths teacher just missing something about Wikis?

We are now into 2011 and the College is finding technical difficulties still with Moodle. We have come to the conclusion that the way forward is to encourage individual Staff enthusiast rather than the whole school (Staff). This term we have had student login problems and so not much has happened. We will need to encourage those staff who want to to take up Moodle with their classes and see how enthusiastically their students react to Moodle. We will then use them to transfer their skills to other staff. My job is to show staff how to use the many options for e-learning contained in Moodle. Still haven't had an answer about Wiki's but I know they are useful for many types of classroom activities. What is good for me is that I have a solid block of 3 hours to work on Moodle per fortnight.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for sharing more of your thoughts about your Moodle journey. What kind of technical difficulties do you encounter with Moodle 2? It still has a number of issues that are being addressed because the overhaul of Moodle was so large that there are many bugs in the software.

Aside from these techical difficulties, I think your approach to nurture early adopters is a great way to go because they are willing to work with quirks and work around them creatively if there is no fix available. Once they are comfortable and have established their workflow, they can support other teachers who want to jump on the Moodle train as well.

Unfortunately, I would not be able to tell you anything about wiki use in maths from personal experience. A quick online search revealed a number of links for "wikis in mathematics". Two pretty detailed descriptions are http://divisbyzero.com/2010/02/24/using-wikis-in-mathematics-classes/ and http://www.scribd.com/doc/4623233/A-Tale-of-Two-Wikis-UpperLevel-Mathema...

Though they are taken from the university level, they may provide you with some ideas on what type of maths assignments can be done in a wiki.

Cheers

Kristina
